New year, new hope for Korogocho
We welcome 2021 looking back on 2020, Toilets For All´s fundraising efforts for schools in Nairobi’s Korogocho slums was the highlight of such an eventful year. The renovation of the latrines in different schools has made a difference for more than 500 children and their teachers up to this date.
Last summer, Toilets For All decided to join forces with Mobile Alert Toilets, MAT, to offer an innovative solution to the sanitation problem in the Korogocho Slums. This partnership has has the goal to renovate pit latrines with containers and sensors. The sensors monitor and send automated messages to alert MAT to empty and use the resources in a safe and hygienic way.
The Korogocho project has a target of 37 schools. The first school, Ryeeda CBO School, was a success. The latrine construction has just been completed in Glorious Junior School before the Holidays. You can find more information about the schools, their location and characteristics here.
The first target of the Korogocho fundraising campaign was Ryeeda CBO School where MAT renovated the existing overflowing latrine with a water level sensor. Furthermore, Toilets For All and MAT provided the children with two POVU POA handwashing stations. If you want to know more, please check out the pictures, videos and thank you notes from our young beneficiaries here.
Glorious Junior School has only one pit latrine which has been divided into 2 sections for male and female use. Before the renovation, the structure was made of iron sheets, but it had neither a roof nor a door. Therefore, the structure caused many problems such as floods when it rained and lack of privacy. The renovation finished in December 2020. Now, 150 girls and 130 boys have access to proper toilets in their school. Click here to see what they think about the renovated latrine.
The pandemic, the global sanitation crisis and the development of our projects have made clear the importance of safe sanitation in schools. The impact that safe sanitation systems can have on children is absolutely astounding. In addition to improving health, safe sanitation has very positive impact on school attendance especially for teenage girls, higher learning motivation and a better quality of life for the whole community.
Many more schools are in dire needs of our support, your help is much appreciated. Toilets for All is already planning the installation of proper toilets in two additional schools in Nairobi’s Korogocho slums.
