Kiambu Primary School finished

Together with Mobile Alert Toilets, we have completed the renovation and expansion of the boys’ “toilet” facilities and installed a biodigester at the Kiambu Primary School, close to Nairobi, in November. It is a large school whose student body will increase to almost 3’000 students starting in 2025 as the 9th grade was just added to the curriculum. Our intervention was very timely as we installed 15 new toilets and 2 10-person urinals rooms, renovated an additional 15 toilets for boys whose facilities were often not operational or in dire need of repair. We upgraded the girls’ plumbing and drainage to link it to the biodigester. We installed a centrally located handwashing station.

The toilet to student ratios were 1:79 (boys) and 1:29 (girls). Now the new boys’ to toilet ratio is 1:42 plus 20 urinals. This capacity increase is substantial and decreases class tardiness. The World Bank’s recommended toilet : student ratio is 1:30.

All toilets at Kiambu are connected to large digesters that produce biogas for the school’s kitchen, enabling cooking 300 school lunches. The school is considering enlarging the kitchen in order to be able to cook more meals.

More details are in the project report established with our partner.
